George Russell reflects on his debut with Mercedes in F1

The Formula 1 driver, George Russell, has recently shared the consequences of his unexpected move to Mercedes during the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. At that time, he took the seat of Lewis Hamilton, who had tested positive for COVID-19.

Russell, who was then driving for Williams, received the emergency call to replace Hamilton just days before the race. In a recent program, he explained that, upon testing the car the next day, he realized it did not fit his body well, as the seat had been designed for shorter drivers. Additionally, Russell had to wear much smaller shoes, which caused him discomfort during the competition.

Despite the challenges with his posture in the car, Russell managed to perform remarkably well, qualifying second on the grid, just 0.026 seconds behind Valtteri Bottas. At the start, he managed to lead the race, building a significant lead before becoming a victim of a pit stop error, which forced him to make a second stop.

In Russell’s words, ‘I was on my way to winning the race, and it was all taken away from me’, highlighting the emotional intensity of that weekend. Furthermore, he acknowledged that if his career had ended that night, it would have left a deep mark on him.

Despite the adversities, the experience with Mercedes was key to his future within the category, showcasing his potential and determination under pressure.
