Pierre Gasly talks about keeping Lewis Hamilton behind F1 Emilia Romagna GP much like how he did so in Monaco last year.

AlphaTauri’s Gasly did not score points in F1 Emilia Romagna GP but he managed to keep Mercedes’ Hamilton behind while he himself was stuck behind Williams’ Alexander Albon. Despite trying hard, the Brit couldn’t get past the Frenchman in the latter half.

“I would not say easy, but it wasn’t too hard,” said Gasly to written media. “Unfortunately for him he always gets stuck behind me on tracks where it’s extremely hard to pass. But I think I was as frustrated as he was?

“Just for whatever reason, even with the DRS, this year was very tough to pass here. It was probably the only thing that happened the whole race. He was stuck behind me, I was stuck behind Albon’s car, and that car was stuck with the car ahead. It was just a train. So yeah it wasn’t a particularly exciting race and quite frustrating.

“Even with the DRS, we were not able to make it round and try to set ourselves up for a move. We know when you have a bad qualifying – we made a mistake in qualy – and when you start from the back, it’s always extremely difficult. And I think we paid the price this weekend,” summed up Gasly.

His teammate Yuki Tsunoda had a much better race where he ended up seventh and in points. “I’m super happy with today, especially to score points at our home track,” he said. “There are a lot of people from the factory watching here in the grandstands today, every lap I could see the AlphaTauri flags being waved and it gave me a great boost, so it feels like a big thank you to everyone that works so hard in the team.

“The pace of the car has been really good today, I didn’t expect it to be quite that strong heading into the race, but we’ve made progress through the week and I’m pleased with the performance we showed this afternoon,” summed up Tsunoda.
