The FIA Formula E Championship has confirmed the cancellation of Rome ePrix due to the COVID-19 restrictions put in place in Italy.
After Formula E were forced to cancel Sanya ePrix in March, the all-electric championship has now put off Rome ePrix as well, which was scheduled for April 4. The decision has been taken after COVID-19 outbreak in Italy with the Government putting up restrictions.
With mass gatherings banned in the country, it became increasingly difficult for Formula E to stage the Rome ePrix on the scheduled date. The series, though, has stated that it will work with the organisers to stage it at a later date if possible.
The statement from Formula E states:
“As a consequence of the ongoing health emergency in Italy and according to the provisions set out in the ministerial decree concerning measures to counteract and contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country – which includes sporting events with large crowds and spectators in close proximity – it will no longer be possible to stage the Rome E-Prix on April 4, 2020.
“Formula E, in agreement with the relevant authorities in Rome, EUR S.p.A and together with the FIA and Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI), will work closely with championship partners and stakeholders in order to assess and review alternative options to postpone the Rome E-Prix to a later date once restrictions have been lifted.
All ticket holders will be contacted through the appropriate channels in the coming days.”
While Formula E has two races cancelled/postponed along with MotoGP and Super Formula pushing its opener, only F1 is surging ahead with its opening races in Australia, Bahrain and Vietnam irrespective of the restrictions. Only Chinese GP has been postponed so far.
