Sophia Floersch’s racing programme for the 2019 season is confirmed with the German racer to continue with Van Amersfoort Racing in Formula 3.

Following her horrific incident in Macau, Floersch is set to return to competitive racing with Van Amersfoort in the 2019 season in the new Formula European Masters championship, which will run as DTM’s support event outside the FIA’s backing.

The FIA will run its own F3 series from 2019 onward alongside Formula 2 as the support event to Formula 1 races. VAR already confirmed its participation in the DTM’s F3 series after not getting a nod to field a team in the FIA’s re-branded F3 series.

So far only German outfit Motopark made a driver announcement with Red Bull and Honda junior Yuki Tsunoda doing a dual programme alongside his FIA F3 commitments. Floersch becomes the second driver to join the grid – the first name for Dutch outfit.

“I am convinced that the Formula European Masters is the perfect race series for me,” said Floersch. “The car is fantastic, and it offers young drivers the opportunity to learn a lot. I love to keep on competing for VAR as I feel really comfortable in the team.

“It certainly wasn’t easy at the beginning as I had absolutely no F3 experience, but they taught me a lot and now I want to celebrate successes with them.” The German has returned home after the surgery in Macau and is rehabilitating for her return.

Speaking about the incident, Floersch added: “When I watched the video of my accident for the first time it felt somewhat surreal. I know that I was lucky and am thankful that the Dallara is such a safe car.

“I already may begin with gentle training and hope that I will be able to get into the cockpit in spring.” Floersch did well in European F3 last year despite joining the series late. She finished 22nd overall with a single point and scored 34 rookie points to be 13th.
