F1 teams and FIA found an accord last Tuesday at Geneva to radically change the qualifying system.


Formula One is about to know a drastic change in the qualifying sessions system which will more be more similar to direct elimination. It will take place in the Grand Prix of Melbourne in Australia, March 20th.

Q1

Q1 will last 16 minutes. After 7 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. 7 drivers are eliminated in Q1, 15 make it to Q2.

Q2

Q2 will last 15 minutes. After 6 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. 7 drivers are eliminated, 8 make it to Q3.

Q3

Q3 will last 14 minutes. After 5 minutes, the slowest driver is eliminated. Every 90 seconds, the slowest driver is eliminated until the chequered flag. The two drivers remaining have 90 seconds to fight for pole.
