Ferrari has accepted the resignation of Mattia Binotto who will leave the team principal role officially at the end of year 2022.
After a tough 2022 campaign for Ferrari, the position of Binotto started to look to be in danger especially with the team not starting the new regulation as per their expectation. A lot was put on the line by the Italian manufacturer but it didn’t deliver.
Despite a good start, Red Bull gained the upperhand and eventually beat them fair and square as mistakes and issues at the Ferrari camp cost them. So much so that they were forced to stop development early and focus on 2023 season.
Towards the end of the season, there were host of speculation where it was becoming clear that Binotto may not be retained. Reports last week suggested that the Italian has filed his resignation from the team principal post which the upper management would approve.
It has been done so with Ferrari confirming his exit from the team principal post formally on December 31, 2022. Binotto will not move back to any technical role but fully leave the Italian manufacturer with whom he has been for the past 28 years.
He was promoted to the team principal role but has taken responsibility of the 2022 shortcoming in a way and decided to leave the company. His replacement is being finalised now and will be done so in the new year as Ferrari looks at various options.
“With the regret that this entails, I have decided to conclude my collaboration with Ferrari,” said Binotto. “I am leaving a company that I love, which I have been part of for 28 years, with the serenity that comes from the convinction that I have made every effort to achieve the objectives set.
“I leave a united and growing team. A strong team, ready, I’m sure, to achieve the highest goals, to which I wish all the best for the future. I think it is right to take this step at this time as hard as this decision has been for me. I would like to thank all the people at the Gestione Sportiva who have shared this journey with me, made up of difficulties but also of great satisfaction.”
At the same time, Benedetto Vigna added: “I would like to thank Mattia for his many great contributions over 28 years with Ferrari and particularly for leading the team back to a position of competitiveness during this past year.
“As a result, we are in a strong position to renew our challenge, above all for our amazing fans around the world, to win the ultimate prize in motorsport. Everyone here at the Scuderia and in the wider Ferrari community wishes Mattia well for the future.”
