Zak Brown highlights the commercial benefits of the race in Washington, D.C. for IndyCar

The CEO of McLaren Racing, Zak Brown, has expressed his opinion on the potential of the Freedom 250 Grand Prix race in Washington, D.C., stating that, although it is a one-off event, it can generate lasting commercial benefits for the IndyCar series.

During the initial practice session at the 1.7-mile, 7-turn urban circuit, located around the National Mall and with the Capitol as a backdrop, Brown made these statements in an interview with FOX Sports.

“This is, I mean, a huge event for IndyCar commercially,” Brown assured. “We have great fans who always enjoy our races, but I think this will attract a lot of attention to IndyCar for new followers. Moreover, when they tune in, they’ll love it. The number of executives we have here is phenomenal, so I already expect there to be a second year, but first we have to get through this first year.”

Despite the fact that his Formula 1 team is competing in Zandvoort, Netherlands, this weekend, Brown has traveled to Washington to participate in the 15th round of the IndyCar season with Arrow McLaren. Brown has advocated the idea that IndyCar should be more aggressive in its expansion into large markets and should traditionally move away from smaller venues, turning race weekends into must-attend events.

The McLaren CEO pointed out opportunities in larger markets, like the Northeast United States, mentioning improvements in major venue concepts such as the Arlington, Texas race held earlier this year around the Dallas Cowboys stadium.

Additionally, Brown detailed how the event could benefit the Arrow McLaren team beyond this weekend. “I believe we are going to build a larger fan base from this event, and when you have a broader base, it attracts more sponsoring partners,” he commented. “So I think this will be very healthy — expanding our fan base, expanding our sponsorship base. The number of people we’ve brought is fantastic.”

Brown concluded his analysis with praise for the circuit, stating: “The layout looks spectacular. I’ve been fortunate to travel the world, and I can’t think of a more impressive setting than the Capitol in the background.”
