The team principal of Williams, James Vowles, has stated that the Formula 1 budget cap is forcing the Grove team to divert resources from the current car development towards an urgent modernization of its facilities.
After a difficult start to the 2026 season, marked by a heavy car and delays during the winter, Vowles has acknowledged that the team is “very exposed” due to underlying infrastructure deficits.
In his statements to _The Vowles Verdict_, issued after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Vowles commented: “We are in a strange situation where we have found ourselves very exposed this winter. We have had many years without being able to improve our facilities to the level they need. And the budget cap constrains this.”
The magnitude of the historical lack of investment in Williams means that immediate performance improvements have had to be sidelined to address long-term operational needs. The team principal confirmed that this balancing act directly affects the results for 2026.
“We are dedicating many resources to address these underlying issues and not to bringing improvements to the car currently,” Vowles added. “Clearly, this winter has shown that we have a lot to do. There is much more that we need to tackle and this is not quick work. We need time to get there. Our commitment is that we will do it.”
After a frustrating Hungarian Grand Prix, where Williams showed pace difficulties, Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz finished in 17th and 18th places, with two laps down from the winner.
At the end of the first half of the 2026 season, Williams occupies ninth place in the constructors’ championship with 11 points.
