The team director of Williams, James Vowles, has issued a message of firmness amid a complicated start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. During the summer break, he highlighted that, despite the initial difficulties, the team has been making progress on some technical and operational improvements.
Currently, Williams occupies the ninth place in the constructors’ championship with just 11 points. Despite having a renowned driver lineup consisting of Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, the team has not been able to score points since the Monaco Grand Prix held in June.
The FW48 model has been marked by balance issues and excessive weight, resulting from production delays that prevented private testing in Barcelona at the end of January. On social media, Vowles acknowledged the current limitations of the car but praised the progress of the work done at the factory. ‘Today we have started our summer break, a necessary opportunity for all teams to recharge,’ he pointed out.
Vowles emphasized that, despite the results on track, the work behind the scenes is intense and the improvement plans are clear. ‘It has been a year of intense work in which we strive to return to a competitive and points-scoring position,’ he said. ‘We are taking this break to reflect and identify areas for improvement. We are committed to finding every millisecond we can.’
Although Williams made strides with updates presented at the Miami Grand Prix, the team continues to linger in the last places. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, both vehicles did not pass the first qualifying round, finishing in positions 17 and 18, allowing Audi to surpass them in the championship standings.
Despite the obstacles, Vowles remains optimistic about the structural changes being implemented, firmly believing that these will bear fruit in the long term. ‘There are many positive improvements that are not visible now but will have a significant impact in the future. We will return renewed and ready for a solid end to the season,’ he concluded.
The competition will return with the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled from August 21 to 23.
