Both title contenders decided to assume a 10 spot grid penalty and have a fresh new engine. Dixon has not taken any risk on the start, but overtook 2 positions, meanwhile Helio Castroneves has come up from twelfth to second, behind Ryan Hunter-Reay, who started eleventh. Sebastian Bourdais has leaded some laps, but then committed a mistake and he has lost some places. Drivers started to pit around lap 37, Castroneves has left the pits very close to Hunter-Reay, he was trying to overtake him but the Penske’s driver had some issue and he has lost some time. The race has stabilised, but then Sebastian Saavedra has crashed in lap 76, Pippa Mann was just behind and she has not been able to avoid it, crashing into the wall. The accident has caused the first yellow of the race, which has been used by lapped drivers to recover one lap.
On the restart, Castroneves has overtaken Hunter-Reay for the lead, but then there have been two more lead changes, the first one for Kanaan and the second one for Bourdais. Carlos Muñoz has showed that he is a fast driver, and he had gained seven positions, fighting with Helio Castroneves for the second place, but on lap 100 he has lost the rear of his car, crashing to the wall, and miraculously no one has crashed into him. Maybe the rookie was being too aggressive. All drivers have entered the box in the pace car period, and Helio Castroneves has retaken the lead. In that minute, he was the champion, because Dixon was twelfth, but 150 laps remained. On lap 112, Justin Wilson also lost the rear of his car, Oriol Servia avoided him, but Josef Newgarden, also trying to avoid Wilson, has crashed into the National Guard car. Simona de Silvestro, James Jakes and Tristan Vautier were also involved in the multiple crash. Justin Wilson had to be taken on ambulance, but the rest of drivers involved left the cars by their own power. Fortunately, news about Wilson are good.
On the restart, Dixon has started to show his real pace, and he has climbed to top 5, Helio Castroneves has done the opposite, falling to P7. Will Power has taken the lead, ahead of Alex Tagliani. It seemed that Dixon had the situation under control and Castroneves had some issues. Sebastien Bourdais has seen how his race was ruined in a poor pit stop. AJ Allmendinger has crashed in lap 190, when most drivers were doing their penultimate pit stop. Helio Castroneves was recovering, but trying to overtake Kimball for third, it seemed that he still had some issues. Alex Tagliani crashed when there were 40 laps to go, and Team Penske made a big mistake, calling Castroneves to pit when it was closed, so he had to pass through without stopping, falling to ninth, but only eleven drivers were in the leading lap. Power was first, Kimball second and Dixon third, and nobody was going to stop anymore.
On the restart, Castroneves has climbed to third, and it has started a fight for the lead between Kimball, Dixon and himself. Quickly, Dixon has given up on this battle that was unnecessary for him, so the battle kept going on with Helio and Charlie, while Bourdais climbed to top again. Castroneves has broken his front wing in the battle, losing any chance to win the championship, but the battle to win the race was being amazing, Power joined Bourdais and Kimball for it. On lap 178, Sebastien Bourdais has crashed after a very strange move, Power let him a very little space. Dixon pitted twice more, but he kept on the lead lap, a shame for Castroneves. On the restart, Charlie Kimball was first but his engine broke and he had to retire. Newgarden also had a mechanical failure, and there was another caution. Only five drivers were on the lead lap, and nine drivers remained on race. Will Power has leaded the last laps comfortably, ahead of Carpenter a Kanaan. Scott Dixon has finished fifth, winning his third championship, another one for Chip Ganassi.
