Will Power, the Australian driver for Andretti Global, has been involved in an accident during his second practice session at the inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix in Markham, Ontario. His vehicle, the Honda #26, collided with the tire barriers after losing alignment in the tenth turn of the new 2.19-mile circuit with 12 turns.
Power had recorded the fifth-best time during the morning practice, but the incident forced a red flag to be raised with less than ten minutes remaining in the practice session. In a subsequent inspection, the driver took responsibility for his mistake, attributing it to poor grip in the previous turn, number nine.
The driver commented that, although the accident was mild, his vehicle was severely damaged. ‘I made a mistake and went off track. There was dust on the circuit that affected tire grip. It’s a shame to lose practice time, especially on a new layout. There were 12 minutes we would have liked to use,’ he said.
The team’s reaction
Ron Ruzewski, the team director of Andretti Global, expressed his disappointment over the lost track time, while showing confidence in the options of the other drivers on the team. ‘It’s unfortunate to lose practice time on a new circuit, but we trust that Marcus Ericsson and Kyle Kirkwood will guide us during the qualifying session,’ he noted.
After a quick damage assessment, the team decided not to use a spare car. The mechanics immediately began working on the repairs of the main chassis to have it ready before the qualifying session, scheduled for 6:30 PM ET.
