Yamaha maintained its 1-2-3 finish on Day 2 of Valencia MotoGP test as Maverick Vinales headed satellite riders Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli.
After Quartararo headed the factory Yamaha of Vinales on Day 1 of Valencia MotoGP test, it was the Spaniard’s chance to be quickest on Day 2 with a 1m29.849s lap over Petronas SRT riders Quartararo (1m30.013s) and Morbidelli (1m30.114s).
Vinales was again running the new engine and chassis as he was the lone to dip in the 1m29s bracket, while the Petronas SRT riders had new parts on their bikes. Behind them was LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow (1m30.316s), who ran both versions.
The British had a late fall at Turn 10. The Suzuki pair were together again with Joan Mir (1m30.427s) in fifth ahead of Alex Rins (1m30.503s) as they ran the new engine. Honda’s Marc Marquez (1m30.556s) was seventh on the 2020 bike with a new aero package.
KTM’ Pol Espargaro (1m30.685s) had a fruitful outing in eighth with Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi (1m30.781s) ninth from Pramac Ducati’s Jack Miller (1m30.854s) in the Top 10, as the latter trialed a new seat along with few other new items.
Espargaro, meanwhile, was among the list of riders to fall at Turn 10 during the day. Miller, in fact, led the Ducati pack with Andrea Doviziso in 11th, Avintia’s Tito Rabat 12th and reserve Michele Pirro 13th. Unfortunately, Danilo Petrucci couldn’t run due to injury.
The Italian only did 10 laps on Tuesday due to pain in the shoulder and decided to skip the whole of Wednesday. Behind the Ducatis were the two KTM riders with reserve Dani Pedrosa in 14th ahead of MotoGP rookie Iker Leucona aboard the Tech 3 machine.
Aprilia’s Aleix Esparagro was 16th with Avintia’s Karel Abraham 17th as Honda’s reserve Stefan Bradl was 18th from the other Aprilia of Andrea Iannone. Bradl did not have a great start after his 2020 Honda suffered mechanical issue like Marquez.
It wasn’t a great time for Iannone either as his Aprilia caught fire early in the day, which left fluid on track. After some issues on Tuesday, MotoGP rookie Alex Marquez had a better run in 20th aboard the 2019 Honda with Aprilia reserve Bradlely Smith in 21st.
The British rider did not take the track straightaway in the morning. The standings was rounded out by KTM’s Brad Binder, who was another Turn 10 casualty. With the completion of the two-day running, the MotoGP circus will now only meet in 2020.
