Jenson Button talks about Max Verstappen’s situation at Red Bull

Jenson Button, world champion of Formula 1 in 2009, has expressed his concern about the growing frustration of Max Verstappen at Red Bull. According to Button, this dissatisfaction could lead the Dutch driver to seek a new team, with Mercedes as one of the most likely options.

During his appearance on the Sky Sports F1 program, Button commented that the loneliness and constant changes within the team could negatively affect Verstappen’s performance. The driver’s contract includes a clause that would allow him to leave if he is not among the top two in the championship around the summer break.

“If his management is not exploring options, they would be failing in their job,” Button explained. “I’m sure there are two teams that would attract him: McLaren, and obviously the big name that is Mercedes. All drivers have contracts, but money can open doors.”

The nostalgia for the teammates who have left the team, with whom Verstappen won titles, may increase his frustration. “It’s understandable that he feels lonely in a team full of new faces and is looking for alternatives for next year,” he added.

For Button, joining Mercedes is the most logical option, with the team positioned as championship leader and performing outstandingly in the 2026 season. “If I were his management, I would work to secure him a spot at Mercedes, either alongside Kimi Antonelli or George Russell,” he concluded.
