The new contracts of Verstappen and Mercedes: an uncertain future

The career of Max Verstappen has been a recurring topic in the world of Formula 1, especially regarding his link with Mercedes. In recent weeks, the team director, Toto Wolff, has spoken about the driver’s future in the context of his recent contract with Red Bull.

After holding discussions in previous years about a possible integration of Verstappen into the star-studded team, Wolff has made it clear that currently, the door seems closed. “This is the first time in a year we are not talking about any real interest,” declared Wolff, who acknowledged Verstappen’s loyalty to the Milton Keynes team.

In the past, Mercedes’ strategy included exploring a signing of Verstappen to replace Lewis Hamilton, who left the team to join Ferrari. At that time, Wolff commented that the idea of securing the Dutch driver was still a present thought.

As the 2027 season approaches, both Mercedes and Red Bull have confirmed the continuity of their current drivers. Mercedes has renewed with George Russell and the recently promoted Kimi Antonelli, while Verstappen has extended his contract with Red Bull, well before the Dutch Grand Prix.

Wolff’s comments on the situation reflect his optimistic outlook. He seems to hope that in the future, with more options in the market, circumstances could change. “Right now we prefer them to continue with the present drivers. In the long run, dynamics and circumstances can evolve,” he added.

Nonetheless, the acknowledgment of Red Bull’s ability to bounce back, even in adverse moments, has left the door open for more competition in future seasons, which could influence drivers’ decisions.
