Max Verstappen says the ball is in the court of the British GP promoters amid finger pointing, as Lewis Hamilton adds on high prices.
Ahead of last weekend’s Spanish GP, the promoters of F1 British GP noted of availability of the tickets for the 2024 race still and general lack of takers to make it a full house. Stuart Pringle hinted of the current dominance of Red Bull as one of the factors.
He reckoned that the F1 fans wouldn’t then wish to come at the circuit to see another Verstappen and Red Bull win. Since the comments from Pringle, the fans have rallied against that notion amid a close ongoing 2024 championship fight.
Fans have blamed the steep ticket prices as one of the key reasons for the British GP to not be a sellout yet. This has been backed up by Mercedes’ Hamilton too, who indirectly came in support of Verstappen by bringing the topic of high ticket pricing.
“I don’t think it’s my fault,” said Verstappen when asked about the recent comments. “I mean, the F1 season is very exciting. There are a lot of teams fighting for wins now and if a promoter can’t fill the seats, and they blame it on someone, then I think they first have to look at themselves and what they’re doing wrong. Because other places are quite easy to fill.”
Hamilton added: “It’s an incredible event. If you take it from a bird’s eye view, the whole event is…all the space is used up. So many fans come and have a great weekend. The only thing I would ever say is that we have to watch ticket prices. I think they’re continuing to rise and the cost of living nowadays, I think it’s too high.
“I’m just thinking from the perspective of a fan that would come with a family. It’s hugely expensive, so I think it’s looking into ways where you can make better accessibility for people.
