Frederic Vasseur says they explained Charles Leclerc over F1 Canadian GP qualifying, but there will be more talks at Maranello.

After Leclerc was knocked out of Q2 in F1 Canadian GP qualifying, the Monegasque was pretty upset with Ferrari and the strategy despite the Monegasque’s call on the radio in tricky conditions. “When the track is so dry and we are staying on intermediates, we are not making our life any easier,” he said after qualifying.

“We will discuss with the team but it’s not the first time it’s happened. We are quite often on the wrong side of making those decisions in those tricky situations. I had a clear opinion and we went for something opposite. Obviously it’s frustrating to accept it first, then you are putting yourself in a very difficult situation.

“From that moment onwards, it slipped away from us. Having said that, it’s not all of that because other drivers managed to go to Q3 in the same way I did. Again, we are just making our life way too difficult. I will manage it myself internally and I don’t want to say what will happen but there will be a talk and analysis. Hopefully we can come back stronger from it because it’s been quite a few times now,” summed up Leclerc.

Ferrari had a better race with a fourth and fifth place finish with a better strategy where Leclerc ended up ahead of teammate Carlos Sainz. Post-race, Ferrari team boss Vasseur revealed about discussions with the Monegasque where they explained him the full picture in a calm discussion between the team and the drive.

“You can always do a better job,” said Vasseur. “But it is true also that the feature that you have 10 seconds after the quali is not always the best one. We had a good discussion with Charles after your discussion with him, we gave him the global picture of the situation; what’s happened during the session and it was much more calm.”

There will be more discussions at Maranello to further improve on the situation as Vasseur agreed that there was communication problem indeed. “Because we need to…..I think the confusion came from the fact that he probably didn’t get the global picture of the quali and so on,” said the Frenchman.

“And we have probably to improve some area that he has to put himself in our shoes sometimes. And we can’t say that we did a good job. I think the pace was mega. And we finish 10/11, so it means something went wrong. It was crystal clear, but it was not our choice because at this stage the rain was coming and we wanted to put them up on the board as soon as possible.

“If you pit at the end of lap one to put a set of softs, then you have two laps to warm up the tyres and you postpone your first flying lap of five minutes. And it was not the strategy at this stage,” summed up Vasseur.
