Stoffel Vandoorne achieved his second victory of the season in GP2 Series in Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The treatment the Belgian driver offers to the tyres was the key for this win in front of Evans and Rossi.
Vandoorne was able to stand Lyyn’s attacks in the start as Gasly set to the second position after. Evans and Rossi were following them and completing the TOP5 in first lap. Positions remained stable in front despite the constant changes behind.
Rio Haryanto, in second lap was able to overtake his teammate in Campos Racing, Arthur Pic, so he was sixth. Behind, Leal suffered a spin in turn 10 after not leaving enough space to Yelloly when being overtaken. The Status GP driver had to retire for this action.
In lap 6 first pitstops were taking place. Vandoorne, Gasly, King and Berthon were the first drivers to stop. Alex Lynn did so a lap after in front of Arthur Pic.
Evans was then leading the race in front of Rossi and Haryanto, who stopped in lap 10. Meanwhile an important battle for the eighth place was taking place between Matsushita and Markelov, ending with the Russian in front.
Vandoorne, Gasly and Lynn lost a lot of time in overtaking drivers as distance with Evans was increasing due to the pace of the Russian Time. When Vandoorne and Gasly reached Canamasas got upset as the MP Motorsport was not paying attention to the blue flags, and so happened with Alex Lynn, who almost crashes into the Spaniard.
Meanwhile Nato stopped in box and a lap later Marciello and Stanaway followed the French. Rossi stopped in lap 11; the North American left the pit lane after Lynn, in sixth place.
A lap after Mitch Evans stopped behind Lynn, who was then overtaken by Rossi. Racing Engineering driver had great tyres and overtook Gasly while going for Vandoorne.
Dams were still losing positions, especially Pierre Gasly, standing Alex Lynn.
Also Marciello got over Arthur Pic. Evans was in fastest lap and got closer to Rossi, who also was closing to Vandoorne when just 7 laps were left.
Dams battle was getting intense when just 6 laps left, between Lynn and Gasly, and finished with Haryanto overtaking Lynn for the fifth place. Race 2 winner in Bahrain could overtake Gasly easily a lap later, and so did Lynn.
Vandoorne was watching how Rossi and Evans were chasing him but both drivers were losing time with their own battle for second place. When 2 laps left Evans got over Racing Engineering driver thanks to DRS in main straight.
Although, he was not able to reach Vandoorne, who achieved his second victory this season followed by Evans and Rossi in podium. Haryanto excelled in a great fourth place in championship battle as Nato, eighth, will tomorrow start from pole position.
