In the latest Grand Prix of Brazil, riders Alex Rins and Alex Marquez expressed their concern over the poor state of the track, describing it as “unacceptable conditions” after being struck by pieces of asphalt during the race.
Following interruptions caused by a sinking before Saturday’s race, the GP had to be reduced by eight laps on Sunday due to what the authorities defined as “track degradation”.
While the championship and FIM have not clarified the reasons for this reduction, the official tire supplier, Michelin, warned that the surface of the track was “breaking and degrading” at turn 11, right after the Moto2 and Moto3 races.
Rins, a Yamaha rider, revealed that during the first lap a piece of asphalt hit his finger, causing him pain. “I felt really low grip, possibly due to what happened in the Moto2 race,” he commented.
On his part, Alex Marquez, who was competing with Gresini Racing, also emphasized that the conditions were not suitable, stating: “The asphalt was peeling at turns 10 and 11, which made the situation very complicated.”
Marquez tried to request a delay before the start of the race to make adjustments, but the race direction did not deem it necessary. “We did not have adequate information about the track conditions,” he commented afterward.
Additionally, Marc Marquez, a Ducati rider, was also affected by the poor conditions, losing a position due to the bad state of the circuit.
With the riders’ complaints about the safety of the circuit, it is evident that the authorities will need to take measures to prevent similar incidents in future competitions.
