Yuki Tsunoda terms the progress from Visa Cash App RB as ‘crazy’ after collective points haul alongwith Daniel Ricciardo in F1 Miami GP.
In the two races during F1 Miami GP, Visa Cash App RB scored a total of 12 points with Tsunoda scoring seven and Ricciardo five to be a solid sixth in the standings with 19 points against Haas, who sits at seventh with seven against their name.
Tsunoda had an off weekend in China but bounced back well in Miami where he looked solid on pace. He hailed the updates and progress that the team has managed to make since last year, while terming it as ‘crazy’ with the amount of points scored.
“Very happy, I mean with the amount of points we got in Miami was a lot for us,” said Tsunoda to media. “It shows how much the people work in the factory are pushing. It is incredible and we are happy that we are able to score these many points. We got upgrades this week and I think that helped a lot.
“Straightaway from FP1, I felt comfortable, in sprint we were P4 and in the main race we got P7, even faster than one of the Mercedes, never achieved like this compared to other races. The amount of progress we have made is crazy. As I said, it is good that we are able to show the amount of progress we are doing in every races since last year.
“Also, the team made such a big progress since last year, obviously from second half of the season last year. I would say the important thing for me is the consistency, I think so far I am able to sometime I perform one of the strong teams, so very happy,” summed up Tsunoda, as teammate Ricciardo fell short on Sunday after Saturday showing.
The Australian managed to defend well in the sprint in fourth but considering the back of the grid qualifying, the traffic made it much worse for Ricciardo in the Sunday’s race. “Not really, look coming into a race, I’m always hopeful and optimistic and excited but I think we were quickly met with the reality that it’s not the same when we’re in traffic,” he said.
“Obviously in the Sprint I was able to use the pace and had a clear track and just used the downforce and the grip of the car but in these battles and with dirty air, we struggle. A lot of the cars in the race had a lot of downforce, so trying to attack and defend was simply just not a straightforward one for us. It just goes back to qualifying.
“It’s so important. Obviously, in qualifying, I was upset with the grip I had on that set of tyres and obviously, I still feel that way, but also, I’ll always look at myself as well. I was like, ‘yeah, I could have still done a little bit better here and there’, so I’ll still hold myself accountable for sessions like that. We’re quick, but we’re not quick enough to start at the back and chop through the field, we’re simply not, so we’ve got to qualify better.”
