The Monza race of the GT World Challenge powered by AWS witnessed one of the most memorable victories in its history, with Tresor Attempto Racing emerging as the surprising winner. The German team, starting from 29th position, has placed Audi back on the top of the Endurance Cup podium, a success not achieved since 2022.
The start of the competition was marked by a massive accident at the first corner, eliminating several of the main favorites. The #59 of Garage 59 suffered a crash, causing the elimination of the top five drivers, including the #64 of HRT Ford Racing, which had secured pole position. Fortunately, all drivers involved in the incident were declared safe and sound.
After the restart, the #17 of Team GetSpeed was leading alongside the #48 of Team Mann-Filter, with Maxime Martin at the helm. However, Martin was deemed responsible for the initial accident and received a three-minute penalty, complicating his team’s strategy.
With the #17 out of the race, Maro Engel took the lead, followed by Alessio Picariello in the #2 of Boutsen VDS. As rivals were taken out, both pairs made their pit stops, keeping the competition alive.
The race entered a strategic phase with a safety car period midway through, benefiting the #32 of Team WRT, which had pitted during the initial neutralization. As traffic reduced, the #2 Porsche felt close to victory, but a series of dramatic incidents altered the final order.
With just 20 minutes remaining, a combined accident and engine failure caused the safety car to come out again, completely changing the situation. The new leader was the #66 of Audi, which had maintained a competitive position throughout the race. This left the #23 of McLaren in third place, while the #48 of Mercedes-AMG was once again a threat.
On the restart, the #87 of Mercedes-AMG tried to quickly pressure the #66, but Rocco Mazzola defended his position well. A new accident shortly after caused a second safety car, bringing the competition to an end. The race concluded with the #66 of Audi crossing the finish line unchallenged.
Mercedes-AMG Team Mann-Filter secured second place, earning important points for the championship, while the #555 of CSA Racing completed the podium. Meanwhile, the #74 of Kessel Racing was the Bronze Cup winner.
The 2026 season will continue next month with the main event of the year, the 24 Hours of Spa, which will celebrate its 78th edition from June 24 to 28. Fans can start preparing for this exciting competition.
