Emerson Newton-John is about to prove that there are no age limits or expiration dates on dreams. At the age of 51, the British driver, residing in California, is preparing to make his return to competition after a long absence of over a decade.
His trajectory in racing has been tumultuous, marked by difficult moments that interrupted the financial support he needed to continue his career. Instead of competing in Champ Car (now known as IndyCar) in 2002, he had to seek sporadic opportunities for more than ten years, participating in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA, as well as some brief opportunities in Indy Lights (now Indy NXT).
His comeback is scheduled for next month in April, where, from the 25th to the 27th, he will participate in the SRO GT4 America at the Circuit of The Americas with Mad Joker Racing. Together with the team owner, Marc Austin, they will compete with a Mercedes-AMG GT4 in collaboration with the American team Lone Star Racing, which has already achieved a third place in the GSX class of IMSA at COTA.
This opportunity was born thanks to a connection from Newton-John’s business partner with Austin. After several conversations, they decided to test their skills at the Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas, and the collaboration quickly flourished. Newton-John has expressed that competing at this level with a vehicle like the Mercedes-AMG is a major step in his career.
The driver has been out of competition since 2015, with two significant pauses in his career lasting more than ten and seven years. These periods without competition have largely been attributed to the lack of financial support, especially after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. When asked about his absence, Newton-John succinctly states: “There has been no money.”
Despite his family relationship with international star Olivia Newton-John, the driver emphasized that he was not in charge of her career. He adds that even if he had had the necessary funds, he would have never stopped competing for so many years.
Newton-John has shared his passion for racing, pointing out that he would get excited even in simple activities like watching the gear before race starts. Now, with his return to competition, he acknowledges that if he participates in major events like the 24 Hours of Daytona, the emotions could come flooding back.
His dream not only includes racing again, but also having his own racing team in the future. Newton-John aspires to be a team owner, a legitimate way, according to him, to generate income, thus bringing in new sources of sponsorship and paid drivers for his team.
