The new F1 cars of 2026 could present a challenge for Lewis Hamilton

Jolyon Palmer, former Formula 1 driver, has expressed some questions about Lewis Hamilton’s ability to adapt to the 2026 vehicles. In his opinion, there are aspects of these cars that may not be entirely favorable for the seven-time world champion.

As the era of ‘ground effect’ comes to an end, Hamilton has shown an optimistic attitude towards the new season. However, Palmer noted that while some characteristics of the new regulations could benefit his driving style, other factors, such as difficulties in braking, may tilt more towards drivers like Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Max Verstappen from Red Bull.

Palmer commented that Hamilton never fully mastered the ground effect generation techniques starting in 2022. This affected his performance, as well as that of the teams he was racing with at the time. The new generation of cars does not have this effect, leaving behind the ground effect system that aimed to keep the vehicles close to the ground to generate greater aerodynamic load.

In his opinion, the increase in driving feel could be a strongpoint that benefits Hamilton. However, he pointed out that the difficulties in controlling energy during braking may not be the most favorable scenario for the British driver, who is known for his aggressive braking style.

With the new driving format and innovations in vehicle technologies, uncertainty remains about how drivers will adapt. Palmer has kept the door open for the necessary adaptations to potentially benefit Hamilton, but he has also made it clear that only time will tell who truly adapts best to the new Formula 1 cars.
