Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Mercedes driver, has had an intense weekend at the Australian Grand Prix after a significant accident during the third practice session. The team director, Toto Wolff, commented that the young driver is ‘learning F1 the hard way’, referring to the difficulties he has faced in his new stage in Formula 1.

Antonelli lost control of his car at Turn 2 of the Albert Park circuit, severely damaging both the front and rear of his monocoque. However, the team’s mechanics pulled off a feat, repairing the vehicle in just two hours before the qualifying session.

After the repairs, Antonelli managed to qualify for the race in an impressive second place, despite his tough start. At the beginning of the race, he experienced issues with his energy deployment strategy, which caused him to drop to seventh place initially.

Throughout the race, the Italian driver had to fight to regain positions, overtaking drivers like Lando Norris and Arvid Lindblad. Ferrari’s decision not to pit during the virtual safety car allowed Antonelli to return to second place by the end.

Wolff praised Antonelli’s strength and resilience, stating that the accident, although unfortunate, is part of his learning process and will make him a stronger driver. ‘He was very quick on Friday and showed good pace on Saturday,’ Wolff said. ‘The fact that he could qualify like this after the accident is a testament to the capabilities of the car and the team.’

Antonelli finished the race just three seconds behind the winner, his teammate George Russell. In a post-race press conference, the young driver expressed his surprise at the speed of the car, despite the initial difficulties. ‘The start was a game changer, but the car was really strong at the end,’ he said.

With eyes set on the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix, 19-year-old Antonelli will continue to work on improving and facing the new challenges ahead.
