The Croatia Rally debuts with an incident for Oliver Solberg

The Swedish driver Oliver Solberg saw his participation in the Croatia Rally abruptly interrupted in the first stage of the competition when his vehicle went off the road.

Solberg, who had recently won the Monte Carlo Rally, had an accident 4.8 km into the Vodice – Brest 1 stage, which is 14.2 km long. His Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 hit a bank and ended up spinning 360 degrees before stopping in a wooded area, off the track.

With the help of fans who approached immediately, an attempt was made to return the car to the road, but it got stuck, leading to Solberg abandoning the competition, who had dominated Thursday’s preparation session.

The first to arrive at the scene of the incident was the Japanese driver Takamoto Katsuta, who decided not to risk making a mistake and opted to slow down upon seeing Solberg stopped.

Meanwhile, the Toyota driver Elfyn Evans benefited from his starting position and won the stage with a time 8.1 seconds faster than his teammate Sami Pajari.

The other teams also faced very diverse strategies. M-Sport, for example, opted for soft tires, which allowed Jon Armstrong to achieve the third-best time, surpassing Hyundai driver Adrien Fourmaux.

Evans continued to control the race, extending his advantage with the best time of the next stage, leaving his lead at 15.9 seconds over Pajari before completing the last two stages of the morning.

In this same scenario, Thierry Neuville managed to climb to third position, aided by a problem for Fourmaux with a puncture. The Hyundai driver confessed that he felt frustrated by his unexpected loss of time, and Armstrong remarked that his issue was caused by an object on the track.

With incidents like these marking the return of the rally, fans are preparing for equally intense competition in the upcoming stages of the Croatia Rally.
