The Kenya Safari Rally, considered one of the toughest events in the World Rally Championship, is preparing to face even more extreme conditions this year than in previous editions. The rainy season has significantly affected the competition, turning the usually difficult tracks into true mud trenches that will test the resilience of the vehicles and the skill of the drivers.

The drivers have referred to this year’s situation metaphorically, comparing and describing the competition as a “lottery”, where luck will play a crucial role in the race’s development. Esapekka Lappi, a Hyundai driver, stated that the situation is comparable to buying a lottery ticket in Europe; one must hope for the best, but the outcome is unknown.

The route, reduced from 383 km to 350 km, stands out for its irregular gravel tracks, with sections likely to turn muddy due to the heavy rains. These conditions have increased the risk of punctures and reliability issues, affecting visibility for the drivers.

A significant influence on the competition will be the weather, with forecasts of sunshine in the morning turning into storms in the afternoon, further complicating the situation. Sebastien Ogier, winner of the Rally in 2023, admitted that these conditions will be the most difficult he has experienced in his three previous participations, confessing that he had never seen so much water on the tracks.

The competition promises to be intense, with each team acknowledging that there will be a high level of difficulty in establishing the correct strategy. Oliver Solberg from Toyota Gazoo Racing mentioned that balancing speed with safety will be key to keeping the vehicle in proper condition amid the various dangers of the course.

The rally will start this Thursday afternoon, and the teams are preparing to face one of the most exciting and unpredictable challenges of the season. With each driver having the opportunity to achieve a good result, the Kenya Safari Rally will go far beyond what can be anticipated, becoming a true adventure.
