Susie Wolff, executive director of the F1 Academy, has shared her vision on how to measure the success of this series of women’s races. Although the question of when a female driver will compete in Formula 1 is recurring, Wolff emphasizes that the main objective is not just to secure a spot in F1.
During a season test at Silverstone, Wolff reflected on the impact that the F1 Academy has on the world of motorsport. While it’s true that getting a seat in Formula 1 is one of the dreams of many young female racers, she emphasized that expectations should be moderated.
“It is important to remember that there are only 22 spots in Formula 1, and thousands of drivers, both men and women, aspire to do so,” Wolff commented in a video shared on the F1 Academy’s social media. Additionally, she noted the progression of last year’s F1 Academy champion, Doriane Pin, who recently had the opportunity to drive a Mercedes Formula 1 car for the first time.
“Doriane performed exceptionally in this test, surprising many,” she added. Wolff believes they are on a good trajectory and that, if they work well, it is inevitable that a woman will reach Formula 1. But for her, this is just one of the signs of success.
The director of the F1 Academy believes that a true indicator of success will be seeing more women involved in this discipline, with more young people diving into racing and aspiring to be a part of the F1 Academy. “That would be a sign that our sport is moving in the right direction,” she concluded.
