Stroll, Verstappen and Sainz on the grid for the Australian GP of F1

Lance Stroll, Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz have been granted permission to start the race of the Australian Grand Prix of Formula 1, despite not having recorded any qualifying time during the weekend.

The three drivers experienced difficulties in the qualifying session, with Verstappen suffering a crash at the first corner and Sainz getting stuck on his out-lap with his Williams. Nevertheless, their performances in the previous practice sessions allowed them to make their presence on the grid, complying with the FIA’s 107% rule.

The case of Stroll has been the subject of a deeper debate, as he had very little time on track due to the known issues with Aston Martin’s Honda power unit. However, his teammate, Fernando Alonso, achieved a competitive qualifying time, which allowed Stroll to be included in the race grid.

The three drivers will start from the back of the grid, according to the 2026 sporting regulations, which state that unclassified drivers who have been authorized to participate will occupy positions behind the classified ones. Thus, Verstappen will start from the twentieth position, followed by Sainz and Stroll.

The decision of the stewards was also influenced by Stroll’s experience in Melbourne and his adaptation to the new 2026 car, arguments that were considered convincing to allow his participation.
