Stoneman wins the second race of the weekend

Dean Stoneman got the win in the difficult second GP3 race of the weekend. Tuscher and Zamparelli finished on the podium.

The first race of the day in Barcelona saw Dean Stoneman winning his first race in the GP3 Series. Stoneman, after a fight with Tuscher, led the race until the chequered flag and he is the second Briton who wins in GP3 this weekend, with Lynn claiming the victory yesterday.

With a humid track due to the rain that fell during the night, the start was clean as the drivers were taking it easy. Tuscher took the lead in the first corner, followed by Stoneman, who passed Tuscher in the second lap. All the drivers suffered the lack of grip of the track and it was difficult to stay in the line.

Behind the leaders, a group of four drivers were fighting for third: Zamparelli, Eriksson, Stanaway and Kirchhofer. Eriksson were passed by the riders behind him, but the took the position back from Kirchhofer when Zamparelli pulled away.

Nagulin suffered a spin and couldn’t rejoin the race, so the Safety Car entered the track. In the meantime, Yelloly and Fontana decided to get into wet tyres. Just before the restart, Mardenborough spun and made all the drivers who were behind of him lose a lot of time. Eriksson tried to take the fifth position back from Kirchhofer and he did it.

The race would finish with time. Stoneman, in the lead, had a comfortable advantage, but Tuscher and Zamparelli catched the Briton due to the humid conditions, so the gaps were easily to reduce. With nine minutes to go, Tuscher was right behind Stoneman with the times dropping. In the end Stoneman won, followed by Tuscher and Zamparelli. Stanaway and Kirchhofer completed the top 5. Lynn is still leading the championship with 31 points.
