Guenther Steiner, director of Tech3, has shared the reasons why the current fixed compensation regulation with MotoGP manufacturers will remain, despite the motorcycle brands’ request for a share of the championship’s profits.
Recently, the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group (MotoGP SEG), together with Ducati, Aprilia, KTM, Honda, and Yamaha, agreed on a new periodic commercial contract for the period 2027-2031. This contract, announced during the Czech Grand Prix, has been considered a ‘historic moment’ for the competition.
During the intense negotiations that lasted for months, one of the contentious points was financial distribution. While manufacturers advocated for a percentage of MotoGP revenues, MotoGP SEG defended a fixed amount. Ultimately, an annual maximum of just under 8 million euros per team has been agreed upon.
Steiner explained why the idea of a profit distribution based on a percentage was rejected, highlighting that, while it’s natural to want more, one must be realistic about the current moment and the state of the championship.
With the approval of the purchase of MotoGP by Liberty Media by the end of June 2025, Steiner believes it’s premature to demand substantial changes and that growth plans should be allowed to develop before reviewing the contract conditions. ‘The current situation is acceptable, and therefore we must work together to increase revenues in the future,’ he added.
Implications for the future
Steiner also expressed concerns about the risks of a profit distribution system. He warned that if a share of profits is requested and these decrease, it could seriously harm the finances of the teams.
Regarding the growth of MotoGP as a product, the next decade will be key to understanding how Liberty Media and MotoGP SEG, alongside the teams, develop the championship after establishing a solid foundation with eleven teams. However, Steiner reminds us that, following the pandemic, the sports world has sought greater growth than ever, so expectations are high, but financial realities must be handled with caution.
