The organisers of the Spanish GP has released a statement on the news regarding a new deal to host the grand prix in F1 2020, which is not the case.
Media reports on Friday during the German GP suggested a deal in place for Spanish GP to continue on in the F1 calendar for the 2020 season at the Circuit of Catalunya-Barcelona. The news, however, has been quashed by the organisers.
They released a statement to state that there is no deal signed between Real Automovil Club de Catalunya (RACC) and Liberty Media/F1 for a contract extension, and that the negotiations are still on between the two parties.
The statement read as:
1. No agreement has been reached yet with Formula 1 in order to renew the agreement for the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
2. The negotiations for the renewal of the agreement with Formula 1 continue, and are still open.
3. As soon as an agreement has been reached, whether for the renewal or the non-renewal, it will be made known officially through the usual channels used by Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Only in May, RAAC released another statement to seek help from Government to keep the Spanish GP on the F1 calendar going forward, citing the financial gains and all the job opportunities, it presents to the people of Barcelona.
Spain is one of the three countries, currently, which is negotiating a new F1 deal alongside Germany and Mexico, after Britain managed to seal a new five-year contract for the Silverstone’s British GP to remain on the calendar until the 2024 season.
With the idea of 21 F1 races on the calendar in 2020 and the confirmation of Vietnam GP and Dutch GP slotting in, it means only one of Spain, Germany and Mexico can feature on the calendar unless they push the grand prix to 22 or 23.
