Thanks to a great start and a great pace, Sergey Sirotkin took his first win of the season during the sprint race at Budapest, he finished ahead of Jordan King and Norman Nato.
Jordan King started on pole ahead of his teammate Norman Nato and Nobuharu Matsushita. Marvin Kirchhöfer could not get away from his place for the formation lap and had to start from the pits. Good start from Sergey Sirotkin who jumped to P2. In the first turn, Antonio Giovinazzi had contact with Sirotkin and damaged his front wing. Later in the lap, Arthur Pic spun and three other drivers – Alex Lynn, Luca Ghiotto and Nobuharu Matsushita– collided with him. All four had to retire and Malja had to pit to change his front wing. The safety car went out with King leading from Sirotkin and Nato.
King completely missed his restart, going wide at every corner and after a battle of half a lap, Sirotkin could pass him. Giovinazzi, who pitted at the restart to change his front wing, was handed a ten second penalty for the collision with Sirotkin. Several laps after being overtaken, King managed to gather himself and match Sirotkin’s pace while Artem Markelov overtook Mitch Evans for P4.
Halfway through the race, Jimmy Eriksson had another mechanical failure and had to retire in the pits. Nabil Jeffri, back in the field, kept losing places and dropped back in the order until the penultimate place, ahead of Giovinazzi. The gaps stabilised during most of the race, the drivers only able to threaten the others for one lap before their tyres overheated.
Sergey Sirotkin claimed his first victory of the season ahead of Racing Engineering teammates Jordan King and Norman Nato. Markelov, Evans, Rowland, Gasly, Marciello, Canamasas and Gelael completed the top 10.
Pierre Gasly kept the lead of the championship ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi.
