Williams’ Sergey Sirotkin is not 100 percent on his future in Formula 1, but insists he has no worries at the moment despite the crazy moves seen off-late.
The British outfit along with Haas, Toro Rosso and Racing Point Force India are the only teams left to confirm their line-up for the 2019 F1 season. Among those, Haas, Force India and Toro Rosso seems to be set with their choices.
While Lance Stroll is set to move to Force India partnering with Sergio Perez, Toro Rosso is speculated to announce Daniil Kvyat as one of its drivers during the Russian GP. Haas as well has Kevin Magnussen pinned with the only question over Romain Grosjean.
It leaves just Williams with two coveted F1 seats. With Stroll moving out, it makes easier for Sirotkin to stay back but there are more than one contenders for the seat which makes the Russian’s case a bit difficult as well.
Not just Robert Kubica, but Mercedes juniors Esteban Ocon & George Russell, McLaren outcast Stoffel Vandoorne and even Renault junior Artem Markelov has been linked so far with the seats in the Grove-based team.
When asked about his future in the media briefing ahead of his home grand prix in Russia, Sirotkin had no guarantees of what he will be doing in the future but at the same time, he added he is not too worried as well.
“I definitely know what I want to be doing,” he started. “I’m not sure I can guarantee something right here, right now, but, I mean, I think it’s quite obvious, with the way everything is developing, I think it’s quite obvious what I want.
“It’s something that should happen quite soon. I have no guarantees right now, right here, but at the same time I’m not too much worried about the future, let’s say.” The Russian has had a difficult first year but mostly down to the car he is driving.
The Russian sits last in the drivers’ standings but has a point to his name – although it is provisional for now due to Haas’ appeal against the decision taken by the FIA to disqualify Grosjean from the Italian GP at Monza.
Nevertheless, Sirotkin has shown good team spirit still and has went on with his job quietly. Talking about the increase in drivers from Russia and also bigger companies aiding the professionals, Sirotkin felt good with the increased support from his country.
“I think it’s [growing culture and companies support] a bit of both generally, the racing getting more and more popular which obviously gives more chances, initially, for the drivers first of all, more like a base and I think we will see it even more in the future.
“Same for the companies: there are more and more companies and different organisations and so on starting to be interested in supporting the racing, whatever it could be. It could be drivers’ sponsorship, it could be like that here.
“Many companies supporting the track activity here in Sochi or other things similar in Moscow or whatever. There’s definitely a lot more movement around this sport nowadays than there’s been, even when I started so it’s a good way to keep going and to improve it.
“I think it’s still just beginning and I think what’s going on on the base what we have today is going to come in quite a few years and I think it will be quite an impressive improvement,” he explained.
