Shane Van Gisbergen has demonstrated a significant advancement in his adaptation to oval tracks following his participation in the Coca-Cola 600 last weekend. Although an 11th place may seem modest, the Trackhouse Racing driver left the Charlotte Motor Speedway with a sense of disappointment, as his performance had been outstanding and promising.
In this race, Van Gisbergen averaged positions in seventh and even led for 11 laps. Despite these successes, a poor strategy and a mistake during a pit stop affected his final classification, which was impacted by rain, finishing just outside the top 10.
In a press conference at Nashville Superspeedway, the New Zealand driver stated, “It was a good day, but I felt frustrated because the final position didn’t reflect what we had achieved during the race. We need to keep working to improve.” Van Gisbergen admitted that while he feels he is adapting, there are still challenges, especially on concrete tracks like Bristol and Dover.
His teammate, Ross Chastain, highlighted Van Gisbergen’s progress after the race: “He hasn’t had much previous experience on oval circuits, but he has proven to be a great driver who knows how to manage tires and is quickly learning to adapt to the demands of racing.”
Additionally, Van Gisbergen has had the opportunity to start the next race at Lebanon from the 10th position, which will facilitate his race. He remarked that competing from a more advanced position can enhance his experience: “It doesn’t compare to racing from the middle of the pack; it’s much more enjoyable to be upfront, where the competition is cleaner.”
With the goal of continuing his training as an oval driver, Van Gisbergen remains optimistic and is committed to continue learning with each race, hoping to overcome new challenges in the upcoming circuits.
