Sergio Pérez has shared details about his experience with Red Bull Racing, revealing that the former team principal, Christian Horner, told him directly that they only competed with two cars because it was a necessity. Horner admitted that the team would be more than happy with a single vehicle, referring to Max Verstappen’s central role in the team’s operations.
In a recent appearance on the High Performance podcast, the Mexican driver, who now is part of Cadillac, explained that when he joined the Milton Keynes outfit in 2021, Red Bull’s infrastructure was designed around their four-time world champion teammate.
“The first time I met with Christian, he said to me: ‘We’re going to race with two cars because we have to, otherwise, we’d be super happy racing with just one car’,” Pérez emphasized. He stressed that everything at the team was aimed at winning the championship alongside Verstappen.
Despite the difficulties faced during his tenure, Pérez assured that he made the most of the opportunities available and highlighted his great performance during the four years he spent at the team. “I exceeded expectations in all areas. It was a fantastic experience, with complicated moments towards the end, but very rewarding overall,” he commented.
The 36-year-old driver left Red Bull at the end of 2024. Since then, Verstappen has had three different teammates, including Liam Lawson, Yuki Tsunoda, and current Isack Hadjar. When asked if he believes Red Bull could have won the constructors’ championship in 2025 with him on the team, Pérez admitted it’s an unknown, but he maintained good relationships with everyone at the team.
“Maintaining my credibility and gratitude towards everyone at Red Bull is very important to me. This experience transformed my career, and in the end, all this is a business that must be played intelligently,” he concluded.
