Sebastian Vettel has won the second race of a great season surrounded by a huge controversy with his teammate. The two Red Bull drivers have followed slightly different strategies, but Webber had gone ahead of Vettel after the final pit stop. The difference was so minimal that the two Red Bull drivers have been battling for several laps freely, apparently without team orders, but the truth is that the tension was tangible in radio communications and the pre-podium. After them have finished the two Mercedes, in this case with team orders, which have been followed by Nico Rosberg. The German said his team radio: “Remember this,” Today for you, tomorrow for me.
The race ended early for Fernando Alonso, when he broke the front wing by touching the back of Sebastian Vettel’s car at Turn 2. Being the track wet, the Ferrari team’s strategy was to hold a couple of laps until the dry tires could be used, in order to change the wing at the same time, but it has not been possible because the wing has finally broken. The race has moved on and the pit has started to move very soon, when Vettel, who was then leading, decided to risk by using dry tires. All others sooner or later have imitated, when they saw that the performance was not bad.
We have seen many problems in the pits. There have been a touch between Pic and Vergne when Toro Rosso left out his driver as the Caterham was coming in. The worst has been the withdrawal of the two Force India when mechanics found it impossible to change the tyres of their drivers’ cars. Jenson Button has lost his race when McLaren’s mechanics have not set the right front wheel well in his last stop and had to go back in the pitlane. In addition, Lewis Hamilton came in the wrong box and has gone to visit his former team McLaren.
Other positions of points have been fairly fought between Grosjean, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and Perez, who have advanced each other on numerous occasions. Felipe Massa has been the one who changed the tyres in the last minute of the race but finished ahead of everyone in the 5th position. Jean-Eric Vergne has finished 10th, getting the first point of the season for Toro Rosso.
The lower part of the grid has been benefited by the many dropouts, but it is worth mentioning again the big race made by Jules Bianchi. The French of Marussia has finished 13 º, with Pic a half a minute behind, and in the same lap as Esteban Gutierrez.
