Logan Sargeant says whether he does something good or bad, the media – mostly social media – has things ready to criticise.
It hasn’t been an easy ride for Williams’ Sargeant ever since he made his F1 debut in 2023. So much so that he has lost his seat to Carlos Sainz for 2025. And the American notes that whether he does good or bad, people aren’t going to be pleased.
He talks about media with the aim mostly at social media, where he doesn’t even hop on due to the host of negativity. Since his debut, Sargeant has been on and off with his performances, especially when pitted against Alexander Albon.
He has had his moments of glory but those have been limited for various reasons. It has been bit of lack of immediate updates on his side and bit of lack of experience. But this year, he has been vocal that he has been driving well all-through.
Despite some good performances, his image is such where he doesn’t care about what people say. “Is it the media that creates an image of me? Well, I do believe that no matter how I drive, whether it’s good or bad, I’ll get criticised either way,” said Sargeant. “So, I’m at a point where I really don’t care what people think.
“It’s impossible to please everyone, so I show up and I do my best to please myself. It is really, even when I do things well, it’s still all negative. Well, not completely, but you still see a lot of negativity. And that’s why you see a lot of athletes really not in control of their social media anymore because it gives people a voice that they have never experienced performing at this high of a level and how difficult it is.
“And it just is what it is. I have been off it [social media] for a while. It is a good point [that I am probably mixing media and social media]. It’s quite a draining place – when you’re doing things well, of course people want to drive you down,” summed up Sargeant, who also stayed away from commenting if American and Europeans are treated differently.
Since it is largely an European sport, there have been certain voices of bias treatment, not just within the sport but also from media and fans. But he didn’t wished to get into it. “It is a very thin line question to answer,” he said. “I don’t think I can say what I really think. I’ll leave at that.”
