Carlos Sainz has shared his vision for the future, expressing his desire to participate in the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans when he finishes his career in Formula 1. Currently driving for Williams, Sainz revealed his aspirations during an interview on the podcast Team Torque.
In response to questions about his long-term plans, the Spanish driver commented: ‘I would like to compete in some other categories’. When asked if he has a ‘checklist’ of goals in motorsport, his answer was clear: ‘I really want to do Le Mans’.
In addition to his ambition to compete in the main Hypercar category of Le Mans, Sainz raised the possibility of a campaign in GT3 with friends. ‘If a good GT3 team is formed with which I know I would have fun, I could enjoy that,’ he assured.
The 31-year-old driver emphasized that when he retires from F1, he wants to experience the world of motorsport from a different perspective. ‘I think, in the end, it’s about enjoying motorsport in a way that is different from how we live it now,’ Sainz reflected.
Currently, Sainz is having a difficult season with Williams, sitting in 15th place in the drivers’ standings with only six points. His teammate, Alex Albon, is 16th with five points, leaving Williams in ninth position in the constructors’ championship, with 11 points accumulated.
The Formula 1 season enters a break period, with the championship set to resume with the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, from August 21 to 23.
