Sainz and Kvyat took advantage of the weather to finish ahead of the Mercedes of Rosberg and Hamilton under the rain in Suzuka.
Free practise 1 started with a very wet track which didn’t allow the drivers to test much. Carlos Sainz was fastest ahead of Kvyat, Rosberg, Vettel, Hamilton, Versttapen, Raikkonen, Massa, Ericsson and Bottas closing the top 10.
The second session of the day was also spicied up by the rain. This time, Kvyat took 1st place with his Red Bull. Halfway through the session, the rain increased and nobody improved their times. Some drivers like Alonso, the Mercedes and the Ferraris continued on track but with no changes in positions.
The top 10 was completed by Rosberg, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Vettel, Raikkonen, Sainz, Verstappen, Nasr and Maldonado.
