The race start was so messy, and the winner of the last race, Will Power went off the track, passing over the grass at the first corner and falling to position eight. At turn 2, Graham Rahal crashed into Oriol Servià, as a result the catalan driver spun, but both drivers were able to continue the race without more problems. James Hinchcliffe, has left the race just after a few laps, after an accident that has forced the only yellow of the race. After that, Ryan Hunter-Reay has opened a big gap over his main persecutors, Tristan Vautier and Charlie Kimball. Tristan Vautier had a complicated stop, and he lost some places. Will Power was the last one to stop, doing a very long stint, and he was on the lead until his pit stop.
In that moment of the race, Helio Castroneves destroyed the gap between him and Hunter-Reay, doing the fastest times. Dario Franchitti had mechanical issues and was forced to leave the race for the second time this season. Will Power improved to first position, doing a different strategy, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves were very close to him. Castroneves passed Hunter-Reay despite the champion hit Castroneves, who also passed Will Power for the lead. Power was driving with old tyres, and blocked Hunter-Reay a lot of laps. Castroneves took advantage of this situation, and opened a big gap over Power.
After the final stops, Helio has lost part of the advantage, and Hunter-Reay was faster with red tyres (the softest compound), like Scott Dixon. Castroneves has not been able to maintain his position, Hunter-Reay and Dixon passed him and maintained an interesting battle until the end, doing similar times.
