George Russell reflects on his tough start to the 2026 F1 season

The Mercedes driver, George Russell, has shared his thoughts on the difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season. Despite the setbacks, Russell emphasizes that he has not lost faith in his performance.

Russell achieved a victory in the Australian Grand Prix and one in the sprint race in China, but he has experienced a series of unfortunate moments. His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, has taken the lead in the championship, increasing the pressure on the Brit.

After the Shanghai race, Russell faced mechanical issues during qualifying, resulting in a second position behind Antonelli. Both Mercedes drivers finished the race in the same positions.

In Japan, his strategy was affected by a safety car that appeared just after his stop. Russell finished fourth, while Antonelli secured his second victory of the season, becoming the youngest driver to lead the standings.

At the Miami Grand Prix, on a track he doesn’t particularly like, Russell again missed the chance to step onto the podium with a fourth place. However, at the Canadian Grand Prix, he showed signs of recovery, winning the sprint race from pole. Unfortunately, a catastrophic battery failure left him out of the race while he was leading.

Bad news continued in Monaco, where Russell received a penalty for speeding in the pit lane, which was later converted into a passing penalty for not being completed correctly. He finished the race in twelfth position.

Russell had a more positive result at the Barcelona Grand Prix, where he finished second behind Lewis Hamilton, and finally won again at the Austrian Grand Prix.

During an appearance on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show, Russell reflected on the emotions experienced and stated that, despite the difficulties, he never lost faith. ‘The entire season can change in an instant,’ he commented, emphasizing that adversities are part of the competition.
