23-year-old Swede Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam) came out on top in a race in the royal park of Monza that remained thrilling until the very end. At the 5.793 kilometres long Formula 1 track, he won with a slight margin from three years younger Danish driver Mikkel Jensen (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport), who scored his first-ever FIA Formula 3 European Championship podium finish as the best-placed rookie. Jake Dennis took the chequered flag in third place from Antonio Giovinazzi (Jagonya Ayam with Carlin) and Charles Leclerc (Van Amersfoort Racing). Sixth place went to Raoul Hyman (Team West-Tec F3), who thus scored his first points in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship. By finishing fourth, Italian Giovinazzi, the FIA Formula 3 European Championship points’ leader, extended his margin from Charles Leclerc, runner-up in the drivers’ standings, to 17 points.
Felix Rosenqvist made the most of his pole position and took the lead as the lights went out. On the first few metres, Santino Ferrucci (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport) and Lance Stroll (Prema Powerteam) followed behind him. Soon after that, the safety car was deployed as the car of Artur Janosz (Eurointernational) had to be recovered following a start line collision.
After the restart, Rosenqvist hold on to the race lead and even managed to pull a slight gap. On lap nine, the order in the chasing pack changed after Mikkel Jensen found a way past his team-mate Santino Ferrucci. Four laps later, American driver Ferrucci collided with Jake Dennis and retired. Only one lap after that, Jensen mounted his first challenge to Rosenqvist, who was still leading the race, but didn’t manage to overtake him. Instead, the rookie driver had to focus more on defending his position in the closing stages of the race, because Jake Dennis was waiting for him to make a mistake. However, Jensen didn’t grant him this favour and eventually crossed the line in second place behind Rosenqvist and ahead of Dennis.
Behind the three fastest youngsters, the junior drivers showed thrilling racing action as well. In the closing stages, Raoul Hyman initially defended his fourth place, but a slight error on the final lap allowed Antonio Giovinazzi and Charles Leclerc to get past. Prior to that, Hyman and Leclerc had overtaken Lance Stroll in the battle for fourth while Stroll dropped out of the point-scoring positions due to a collision with Antonio Giovinazzi a little bit later. After 19 laps, the 16-year-old Canadian finished eleventh.
Behind Hyman, Pietro Fittipaldi (Fortec Motorsports) finished seventh in the presence of his grandfather, two times’ Formula 1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi. For the Brazilian, who drove with a splint for his broken hand incurred at Pau only a fortnight ago, it was his best FIA Formula 3 European Championship result. George Russell (Carlin), Brandon Maïsano (Prema Powerteam) and Arjun Maini (Van Amersfoort Racing) completed the top ten.
Felix Rosenqvist (Prema Powerteam): “I am very happy to have won this race that wasn’t particularly easy for me. My start was good, but I had problems with the clutch from the very beginning. I always lost speed while shifting up and the car was difficult to drive in general as well. I even briefly considered turning into the pits. Fortunately, the problem got better as the race went on. Nevertheless, I was glad to see my rivals involved in many battles, because that allowed me to hold on to the lead, in spite of my car not being perfect. To me, the slight collision with Mikkel was a race incident that can happen.”
Mikkel Jensen (kfzteile24 Mücke Motorsport): “On the first three race weekends, we were having a problem with my car that we now have solved. This race was tough, because my main rival Jake had a better top speed. Of course, the fact that I still managed to stay ahead of him and bring second place home is making me very happy. Now, the first victory is my next goal. My car wasn’t seriously affected after the contact with Felix. I just lost the nose tip, which made it quite fresh inside the car.”
Jake Dennis (Prema Powerteam): “First of all, I had to find a way past a few of my opponents before I was in third place. These duels were really hard at times. Eventually, I was quite closely behind Mikkel, but I didn’t want to take any excessive risks. After all, third place gives me a lot of points, too.”
