Nico Rosberg proposes changes to F1’s VSC rules after Lando Norris’s setback at the Spanish GP

Nico Rosberg, Formula 1 world champion in 2016, has proposed significant reforms to the rules of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) following an unfortunate incident that affected Lando Norris at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver, who started the race from pole position, lost a critical position due to a VSC that was deployed while Norris had already passed the pit entrance. This prevented him from taking advantage of a stop that would have been more beneficial, while his rivals were able to benefit from this situation.

Rosberg has suggested closing the pit entrance during VSC periods or drastically reducing the speed limit, with the aim of preventing drivers from gaining unfair advantages. In his interview on Sky Sports, Rosberg admitted that the current system can be problematic, as the reduced speed makes pit stops less severe in terms of lost time.

After Norris’s result, who finished third behind Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes and Max Verstappen from Red Bull, Rosberg expressed his concern over the unpredictability of the VSC and its capacity to influence race results.

Rosberg stated: ‘The problem is that we hate seeing cars going around behind a safety car. It’s the most boring thing in F1. It would definitely be interesting to explore ideas to make pit stops during a VSC involve a loss of time similar to that of a normal situation.’
