The Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit hosts this week the official test prior to the 110th edition of the Indianapolis 500. This open test, which takes place on a 2.5-mile oval, includes the participation of all 33 drivers entered for the Indy 500 scheduled for May 24, and runs over two days, Tuesday and Wednesday.

One of the highlights of this session is the Rookie Orientation Program (ROP), where rookie drivers must demonstrate their skills to participate in official race activities (practices, qualifying, and the race). The ROP took place for two hours on Tuesday, marking a key moment for novice racers preparing to face the challenge of competition.

On this first day, the three full-time rookies in the IndyCar championship, Mick Schumacher, Dennis Hauger, and Caio Collet, had the chance to make their first fast laps on this legendary oval. The ROP is divided into three phases, and each one requires completing a specific number of laps at established average speeds.

Progress in the Orientation Program

The ROP requires drivers to meet certain speeds to advance to the next phase. In the first phase, they must complete 10 laps at an average speed between 205 and 210 miles per hour. After completing this phase, they move to the second, where the required speeds are between 210 and 215 miles per hour. Finally, the third phase requires an average over 215 miles per hour for another 15 laps.

On Tuesday, Collet and Schumacher successfully completed all phases of the ROP. Although Hauger did not finish the third phase during the two hours allotted, he has the chance to try again later during the test.

In addition to the rookies, Jacob Abel, a rookie from 2025, also joined, attempting to qualify for this edition with a vehicle from the family team Abel Motorsports.

Veterans: Newgarden Sets the Pace

Before the rookie session, the veterans of the IndyCar championship had the opportunity to run for two hours. Josef Newgarden, driver for Penske-Chevrolet, recorded the fastest lap of the day with an average of 223.415 miles per hour, becoming the first leader of the session.

Behind him, two-time 500-mile winner Takuma Sato ranked second, followed by Patricio O’Ward from McLaren-Chevrolet. The circuit will remain open until 6:00 PM (local time), allowing veterans who have not competed recently a chance to refresh their knowledge of the track.

This year, veterans such as Ed Carpenter and Helio Castroneves are included, who will need to quickly adapt to be ready for next month’s big race.
