The story of Rockingham Speedway has experienced a new unfortunate chapter, as the track has been excluded again from the NASCAR Cup calendar for the 2027 season.
The official statement issued by Track Enterprises highlights the uncertainty surrounding the facilities. Despite this, the company remains optimistic and continues to look for opportunities to bring back racing activities to “The Rock” in future editions.
Owned by the IHRA, Rockingham has suffered financial instability in recent years. The statement also informs that updates on future scheduling will be announced when possible, with the hope of welcoming fans back to the track.
Opened in 1965, the circuit lost its Cup race after the 2004 season. Since then, it has gone through various owners, with a brief return for truck races in 2012 and 2013. In 2025, the circuit regained dates to host events from the NASCAR O’Reilly and Truck Series categories, but this relationship will not extend until 2027.
Bob Sargent, president of Track Enterprises, expressed gratitude for the support received over the past two years: “The return of NASCAR to Rockingham has been a special opportunity, and the support from fans, competitors, sponsors, and the community has exceeded all expectations. Although we are disappointed not to have NASCAR at Rockingham next season, we remain optimistic for the future and are seeking new opportunities to bring racing back to the track.”
The schedule for the upcoming season is already underway, but unfortunately, Rockingham will not be part of this edition. Some long-time fans also lament the loss of the points race at North Wilkesboro, but at least this historic North Carolina circuit will host a triple weekend that will include the All-Star Race in 2027.
