Renault F1 junior Christian Lundgaard will make his FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship debut in Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina circuit with Trident.

Having completed his maiden Formula 3 season with ART Grand Prix in sixth and also claiming a podium finish in the Qualifying Race of Macau GP, Lundgaard will make his F2 debut with Trident in Abu Dhabi next weekend in the 2019 finale.

Lundgaard will replace Ralph Boschung to race alongside Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi as the Dane contemplates his future move together with Renault, whether to stay back in F3 or graduate to F2. “I’m proud and excited to make my F2 debut,” the Renault junior said.

“I would like to thank Renault Sport Academy, Trident and my partners for their faith in me. Stepping into a championship at the last round is going to be a big challenge, but it will be great experience.

“F2 is a big step up, the racing is always hard-fought and you need to think strategically on how to turn the races to your advantage – I’m looking forward to getting started and seeing what we can do.”

“We are very happy to welcome a talented young driver like Christian Lundgaard, as he is proving to be one of the most interesting prospects in Motorsport,” said Trident’s  Team Manager, Giacomo Ricci. “This year, as a rookie, Christian delivered a great season in F3.

“I was impressed by his skills every time I saw him on track. For Team Trident, to have Christian on board represents an excellent opportunity to take home good results and contribute to his growth.

“We will do our best to support him on his F2 debut, on a track on which he has never raced on.” It hasn’t been the best of F2 seasons for Trident as it sits last in the standings with just 13 points to its name and a best of seventh place finish.
