It is once again that time of year when Kimi Raikkonen’s future is deliberated in the media, whether Ferrari will keep him in for another Formula 1 season or finally let him go.
With eight races done so far in the 2018 championship, Raikkonen’s future is again the talking point with speculations around the promotion of Charles Leclerc from Sauber to Ferrari for the 2019 season.
This also sparked the rumours around a return to McLaren for the Finn if Fernando Alonso moves to IndyCar with the speculated McLaren Andretti outfit. When Raikkonen was asked if he had any interactions with the McLaren’s management, in his typical way, he said:
“I spoke to them, for sure, but in the past a lot obviously when I used to be there. Like I said, I have zero interest to get involved in all the nonsense, in my view. You would like to know, would you? You can take it as you want.
“I don’t think you anyhow ask our opinions about a lot of stuff you guys write, so, it goes either way, you can put yes or no. You usually write what you decide yourself, whether it’s true or not.”
The Finn wasn’t in the mood at all to comment on his future, reflecting back to his earlier comments on him finishing his F1 career with Ferrari. “I don’t know really. I think it was 2007 already, that I [said I] would finish [with] Ferrari.
“And obviously at some point it didn’t look like that and now it looks like that again. You never know what comes after and this and that, but we will see. As always a lot of talk and I’m not really happy to comment on those.
“We’ll see at some point what happens, including me. Let’s wait and see,” he said, adding that it is a ‘normal situation’ for him anyways. Apart from his F1 future, there has been calls regarding him moving back to the FIA World Rally Championship as well.
The returning Toyota have been said to have offered him a test so as to look into a possible return to championship after his attempt in the 2010 and 2011 seasons, before making a comeback into F1.
Raikkonen has looked much better on Sundays this season with qualifying being a big trouble for him, especially in the Q3 where he is making mistakes despite looking like to take pole position. He sits fifth in the standings with 83 points.
