The competition among drivers determines a Racing Bulls update for Spa

The Formula 1 team Racing Bulls has decided to use the competitiveness among its drivers to decide who will receive a valuable update for the Belgian Grand Prix. With only one roll hoop update available for the Spa-Francorchamps weekend, the team opted for a fun challenge between Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad during qualifying for the British Grand Prix.

Both drivers, who have shown consistent performance and have earned several points in the recent races, did not require additional motivations. The team principal, Alan Permane, proposed that the fastest driver during qualifying would earn the update for Spa, thereby maximizing internal competition between the two.

The new update includes a revised rear wing, a new front brake system, and a redesigned engine cover. To optimize airflow around the engine cover, the roll hoop has also been reduced, which required a complex chassis modification that could not be applied to both vehicles in time.

Permane explained: “I sat down with both drivers in Austria and communicated the situation to them. I told them we had an update but could only apply it to one of the cars for Spa. If I didn’t do it, the alternative was that no improvement would be made and both would receive it for Budapest.” Clearly, this was not a viable option.

Ultimately, Lawson and Lindblad agreed to participate in the competition. Lindblad managed to qualify in ninth position while Lawson, who could not improve his time, finished in tenth position, granting victory to Lindblad.

To ensure that the situation is fair in the future, Permane suggested that Lawson will have priority the next time a similar dilemma arises. “If it happens again, Liam will automatically get the update” he confirmed.

After implementing a significant improvement to their car in Montreal, Racing Bulls has been one of the underappreciated teams in the midfield of F1. “We were in our own battle for sixth place last year, and that was very important for us. The improvement we brought to Montreal really ignited the car,” concluded Permane.
