Shane Van Gisbergen claims it is easy to sell NASCAR to non-fans

Shane Van Gisbergen has found it very easy to promote NASCAR to outsiders because he himself was one a few years ago, and he has enjoyed learning about this world over the past three years since his transition from Australian Supercars.

This makes him, to some extent, the perfect ambassador when talking to non-fans at events like the one that took place over the weekend at the Naval Base Coronado, which NASCAR reported attracted 67% ticket buyers who had never attended a race before.

“That’s why it’s great to visit new places and meet new people,” Van Gisbergen said Saturday at Sonoma Raceway when asked about the subject. “I think it’s important to show them what the sport is about, and hopefully, we’ll have good races in the coming weeks to keep them interested.

“I think our sport is really impressive.”

Van Gisbergen is aware that the international racing community, of which he is a part, is very focused on Formula 1, but he also believes that NASCAR has a lot to offer that audience. “In motorsport, you don’t know who will win, while in F1 there are three drivers who will,” he said. “I think our sport is really exciting; even on a road course there are ten drivers who can win. It’s impressive how many new storylines there are each week in our sport.”

“I think you (the media) do a good job, but we also need to do a good job to keep people interested and to continue bringing new storylines and attract more people to our sport.”
