The third and final practice session of the Grand Prix of Alabama has been dominated by Team Penske, who had put their four cars in the first five places. It’s been almost an incident-free session.
Green flag waved and all drivers quickly joined the track to improve their times. Scott Dixon was the first one to do good times. But Penske drivers, who had already led first season, got to the top soon, and Will Power was sharing the lead with Dixon. All drivers were still driving with hard tires.
With 20 minuts into the sessions, drivers like James Hinchcliffe or Marco Andretti, who led Friday’s second season, reached the lead positions. At this moment, the first incident of the season happened as Mikhail Aleshin ran wide into the grass.
In the last 10 minutes, Hélio Castroneves became the next leader of the session, and a few minutes later Josef Newgarden took the lead from his teammate and made it a Top 3 for Penske. Behind them were Aleshin and Simon Pagenaud‘s fourth Penske. With two minutes left, Ryan Hunter-Reay spun in one of the fast sections and was close to hit the wall. Almost at the end, Power did a 1:06.9953 and took the best time of a session in which Team Penske clinched the top three positions. Despite the domination of the Captain’s team, they were the only Chevrolets in Top 15.
Qualifying session will start today at 3:30 PM local time, while race is set to be held tomorrow at 2:30.
