Pirelli to retain same compounds for 2024, axes unused C0 tyre

Pirelli says there will be no new compounds in 2024 with F1 teams to test existing tyres, as the C0 compound will not continue on.

Ahead of the 2023 F1 season, Pirelli introduced a C0 compound which was 2022’s C1 tyre. They tried to bridge the gap between 2022’s C1 and C2. But interestingly, the C0 tyre was never used in 2023 and will now be discarded from use for 2024.

And so, the 2024 F1 season will once again have five compounds namely C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5. Also, there will be new tyre introduced next year after Pirelli already used them from Silverstone onward and they will carry forward with the same tyres in 2024.

Pirelli undertook tests in Japan and Mexico using a revised version of the C2 and C4 compounds respectively, but it looks like the results were not satisfactory as they are sticking with the same 2023 tyres for 2024 F1 season.

And so, the one-day test post the Abu Dhabi GP weekend on Tuesday will see F1 teams get particular number of tyres to run which can be counted as an early preparation for 2024 F1 season. “As has become customary now, there will be a test day on the Tuesday after the grand prix with each team fielding two cars: one for young drivers and the other in theory for testing tyres,” said Pirelli F1 chief Mario Isola.

“However, there will be no new compounds to try out: the FIA recently communicated that the 2024 compounds will be the same as this year, with the only change being that there are now five rather than six available of them, due to the elimination of the C0 (which was never used during a race weekend this year).

“So the test could be helpful for the teams to work on tyre management by gathering data for next season. The teams will have a predetermined tyre allocation for the test. The car doing the tyre work will have 10 sets available at the test, consisting of one C1, one C2, two C5, and three sets each of C4 and C3. Meanwhile, the car for young drivers will have two sets each of C3 and C5 available as well as four sets of C4.”

The Abu Dhabi GP weekend will also see nine F1 teams use FP1 for mandatory rookie driver testing where Red Bull will have both the cars occupied by young drivers, with others having one spot. Only AlphaTauri will have both of its regulars driving in FP1.
